Introduction Art F200X

 

    Hi, my name is Hudson Parker. Although I am currently stationed on Eielson AFB, I’m originally from Ohio. I’m currently pursuing an associate degree in arts, but eventually I would like to go on to get a degree in piloting. My hobbies include skiing, mountain biking, and almost anything that involves being outside. A financial goal I have is to retire as soon as possible. I am working to achieve this by putting 10% of each paycheck into a TSP account in hopes that it will grow to be enough to retire on.

I like art that isn't done very often, art that is original, or simply makes you think about how it was made. While I wouldn't consider myself an artist, the movie "Man on Fire" has a quote that I think applies to many people; "A man can be an artist... in anything, food, whatever. It depends on how good he is at it." I think that as people, one of the greatest things in life is finding what makes us an artist. While it may not be painting, or sculpting, it can be something that we enjoy and are good at. For instance, I really enjoy mountain biking. While I am not the best at it, I take great pride in the fact that the way I ride is different from the way that everyone else rides. Just like no two painters paint the same, no two mountain bikers ride the same.

    I started my teaching career at Eielson. The two schools I taught at have been demolished and replaced with Crawford Elementary. My nephew is currently stationed there.

Vermeer first painted this work in 1665 and it was then lost until it was sold to a collector for less than a dollar. I think it is crazy to think that a work of art that is now priceless was at one time sold for a dollar.             The use of tone in this painting is striking. Hudson Parker Art F200X 7/27/21 The Growing Economic Power of the Middle Class     The Classical Era of art was influenced by many outside powers. These included growing political powers, the return of aristocracy, revolutions, the rise of the middle class, and the Enlightenment.     The revolutions that were happening throughout Europe and America, combined with an increase in travel due to the ever-growing industrial revolution began to directly impact a shift in power during the 1700s. The change from art that was influenced by the monarchy and church to the middle class and aristocracy was on its way. This power shift led to artists working for the average man, instead of for the Church or a rich monarchy. Romanticism vs. Impressionism Impressionism     Impressionism's dabs of color and loose brush stoke techniques lead me to prefer it over romanticism.   It is wild to me that an artist can add to a painting by adding "random" (although well thought out) splotches of paint. Most works of art would be ruined with such a technique but impressionism leaves the viewer with a sense of imagination.  A Van Gogh Self Portrait from 1886     When people think of Impressionism, they often think of Vincent Van Gogh's famous painting, Starry Night (June 1889). While Starry Night is a great piece of art, I prefer the self-portraits that he did throughout his relatively short lifetime. The above Self Portrait  from 1886, painted in Arles France, is one of my favorites due to the fact that he looks so wise and calm.
